NEW DELHI: A septuagenarian doctor and his 62-year-old wife were killed after getting run over by a car driven by a 28-year-old woman in Dwarka on Sunday evening. The driver, who works in a multinational company, was arrested and later released on bail.

The deceased couple, Shanti Swaroop Arora (72) and his wife Anjana, used to live in Appu Enclave in Dwarka Sector 11 as their children are settled in the US. The driver, Deepakshi Choudhary, also lives in the same society.
The incident took place when the couple was out on an evening walk on the side of the road. Witnesses told police that around 6.30pm, Choudhary first hit them with her slow-moving Baleno car and then ran over them, leaving them trapped.
CCTV footage showed Choudhary stopping her car and stepping out, while locals rushed to help the couple. The locals pulled out the couple after pushing the car away. Choudhary was seen helping locals and talking on phone.
‘I was thinking of something, couldn’t spot elderly couple’
In the meantime, police were informed. The elderly couple was rushed to a hospital where they died of their injuries.
The bodies were sent for autopsy and their relatives were informed. Their son reached Delhi and he was handed over their bodies for the last rites.
DCP (Dwarka) Santosh Meena said, “During initial questioning, Choudhary said her mind got diverted as she was thinking about something. She couldn’t spot the elderly couple and hit them before she could control the vehicle. She didn’t flee the spot and accompanied them to the hospital.”
“A case under IPC sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) has been registered against Choudhary at Dwarka South police station. She was arrested from the hospital and later released on bail. Her car has been seized,” added Meena.
