MUMBAI: The city’s Dharavi area reported 62 Covid-19 positive cases on Tuesday, the highest since May last year.
Previously it was on May 18 that the slum cluster had reported 85 Covid-19 positive cases after which the number of patients had been below the same.
Meanwhile on the third day of the vaccination drive in the locality, a total of 100 persons were administered the vaccine.
Civic officials said that they are hoping for a larger turnout in the coming days and if required buses would also be sent to various areas in the locality to bring senior citizens and those with co morbities to the vaccination centre which is located at the –Urban health centre in Dharavi itself.
Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of BMC G North ward said, “We are focusing on vaccinating as many as possible. Each day the turnout is showing an improvement. Our Community Health Workers (CHV) are already visiting houses to bring out as many persons to the centre. Besides NGO’s and corporators have also been requested to assist the civic body in creating awareness and they have responded positively to the same.”
When asked for the reason for the rise in cases Dighavkar said that ever since the spike in cases were seen all high risk contacts were being tested. As a precautionary measure the civic authority has once again written to the MMRDA authorities to acquire the Mahim Nature Park premises for setting up a quarantine centre. Dharavi currently has 237 active covid cases while the total caseload has touched 4531.
Covid-19 had entered Dharavi on April 1 last year and there were days when over 80 cases have been reported as well. For instance May 3 last year witnessed 95 positive cases being reported in one day while in May 15, there were 84 cases reported.
However December 25, the area had reported zero positive cases for the first time ever since the pandemic.
