Three people allegedly cheated an 18-year-old and his family of Rs 30 lakh on the pretext of giving him a place in the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

The family has lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police. According to the police, the boy’s father is a vice- president with a microfinance company, and the family lives in Mulund.

The boy practises with a local academy there.

Recently the boy had joined Karanataka Sports Club in Fort and used to go there for practice twice a week.

“He met one Pushkar Tiwari who told him that he had played for Himachal Pradesh as a baller in the state’s cricket team. He advised the boy not to try for Maharashtra team as he will have to face a cut-throat competition. He advised the boy to play from other states to avoid competition,” an officer from Azad Maidan police station said.

The boy and Tiwari exchanged their phone numbers. This was sometime in March. Later one day Tiwari called the boy and told him that he knew someone who owned a sports management company and that team KKR required a baller immediately.

“On Tiwari’s suggestion, the boy’s father got in touch with the owner of the sports management team over phone who told him that in the developing squad of the team there was a vacancy for which the family will have to pay him Rs 30 lakh,” said another police officer.

The family members considering the boy’s future in cricket discussed the matter among themselves and decided to pay the amount. They paid the owner of the sports company Rs 30 lakh in two installments.

The owner of the sports company told them that IPL starts in April and that is when a Rs 10-lakh agreement will be made between the boy and the team KKR. According to complaint, after receiving the money, the owner of the sports management company started avoiding his calls. The family got suspicious and soon realized that they had been cheated. The boy’s family then registered a case against the sports management company’s owner and Tiwari.

The cops have registered a case for cheating and are investigating.
